im posting this because of the frequency which i see this while working on customer machines in the shop...
one of the most vital pieces to keeping your engine healthy is to check and change the oil often. in fact, its usually smart to change more often than your manufacturer claims, especially if your ride mx or offroad. unclean oil can not onlycause burndowns, but also reduces performance of your machine and also can cause other problems internally in your engine. make sure that you check your oil EVERY i repeat EVERY ride. also, another thing that is often overlooked is making sure that gas has not leaked into your oil. this can cause problems with surging and damage to your engine internally just as dirty oil would.
the other half of this is fresh plugs. without a good spark plug in your machine you are not running to your maximum potential. make sure you are jetted correctly by checking the color of your plug insulator, it should be a light brown color ( like cardboard) if it is black you are running too rich(too much oil) and not to your full potential, and if it is white or grayish/ash colored your are running lean (not enough oil) and hot and this is EXTREMELY bad for your engine. you are in a severe danger of burning your engine down.
always check oil and spark plugs regularly to perform at your full potential and avoid damage to your engine

i forgot to mention that the way to check for the presence of gasin oil is to look at the oil on the dipstick(etc.) when you pull it from the machine. it should not run off easily like water would, it should stick nearly the same as when it was freshly changed. you can also smell the oil to checkfor gas. if you have gas mixed in with your oil there is something wrong inside your engine and you should have it checked immediately before starting the machine again

great tips, I would like to add that its always best when you are jetting your bike or anything to jet it too rich because all that will do is foul a plug. But if you jet too lean it could burn your motor up. Always make sure your air filter is clean too so no dirt get sucked into your engine. Great tip though

Yeah a unclean filter chokes your throttle response and makes them run like sh!t.

Yeah I am surprised that it didn't seize up instead of just tear the piston all to hell and still be rideable for awhile.

ya i had too much oil in the gas (premix about 32: 1) and was fouling plugs left and right. and then changed the jeting to leener so i wouldnt foul out plugs so often and forgot about it and put in some 50:1 mix the next week and it ended up runing leen and not cooling the piston enough and fryed it. it wasnt cus i didnt let i warm up cus i let it run for about a min before i would ride it.
